What is PlanetKidz?

PlanetKidz is a fun, safe place for you and your kids to play, learn and grow

PlanetKidz was created by a group of concerned parents, educators and experts in technology, security, privacy, ethics, business and law who were frustrated by the lack of any place on the Internet where their kids could play safely -- with or without supervision.  Every place we looked, there were links to inappropriate material either embedded with the childrens' material or within just a few mouse clicks.  The PlanetKidz team does not believe in content censorship per se; however, we believe that a parent has the right to choose the time, place and manner in which information is presented to their child, especially for children who have not reached high school age.

PlanetKidz is based on a few basic assumptions.

1.  The Internet is inherently unsafe.  NetAlert and Ninemsn have reported that more than 1 in 2 parents believe that the Internet is inherently unsafe.  We believe they are correct.

2.  Parental controls currently Available Can be Easily Circumvented.  Ask any 8-year old, and many younger children.  That's why we build a "private" version of the Internet.  Experts bring content to you and your child.  We aren't trying to create rules that will apply to every situation.  We ask parent and teachers to use good judgement and to constantly search for new, exciting and compelling educational content.

3.  Encourage Parent - Child Interaction; But, Make it Safe for Children Even When Unattended.  That's why we provide tools for parenting and mentors to make sure that your child's time online is as educational as it is fun and safe.

4.   The Only Reliable Way to Authenticate and Verify Kidz Is Through The Direct Participation of Parents and Teachers.  There is just no other way to balance legitimate interests in privacy and public safety at the present time.  In other words, kids can't join unless both their (i) parent or guardian and (ii) their teacher, join with them so they can verify the identity of the child/pupil.

5.  The Site should not have any advertising.  There just isn't any way to assure safety if there are any links to any outside site, or any advertising content inserted that we do not completely control  (e.g., reverse auctions of audio or video black space or other automatic ad insertion).  Very limited and tastefully implemented sponsorship may be permissible if necessary to obtain additional funding.

6. The site should be free, or as inexpensive as possible, while assuring safety and the quality of our content.  Our first sponsor, TechNexxus, LLC has contributed all hardware, software and bandwidth for the current site and only asks that we try to make the site available to children for free, or for the lowest cost practical.

7. Teachers (and or their school or choice of recognized charity) should be reasonably compensated for the time they dedicate to PlanetKidz.  Our technology effectively leverages each teacher and can provide great value to each participating student while providing the teacher with reasonable compensation for the valuable services they provide to PlanetKidz.  Teachers have already made a great contribution to our society.  They deserve additional rewards for this additional effort.
